Poker is a card game played with chips (representing money) in which players place bets on their hands. It has many variants, but they all share certain features. The game is normally played between two players, although there are games for up to 14 people. The object is to win the pot, which is the sum of all bets made during a hand. To win the pot, you must have a high-ranking hand. Ties are broken by the highest unmatched cards or secondary pairs (three of a kind or four of a kind). Some games use wild cards, while others specify which suits are higher or lower than other suits.

The game is typically played with a standard deck of 52 cards, though some games use multiple packs or add jokers to the mix. The cards are ranked from high to low as follows: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and Ace. There are four suits: spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. The higher the rank of a poker hand, the more it is worth.

There is a round of betting after each player receives their hole cards. The player to the left of the dealer begins the betting with a mandatory bet called a blind, which all players must match or raise unless they fold their hand. The player to their right may then raise the bet they make, or call it if they have a superior hand.
